2019-04-10 Intel CPU shortages helped AMD, hurt PC shipments in first quarter, analyses contend Shipments of personal computers were constrained at the beginning of 2019 by continuing shortages of central processing units due to shortages at Intel Corp. , which may have pushed PC manufacturers toward chip rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. , according to third-party analyses released Wednesday afternoon. In their quarterly reports on the industry, IDC and Gartner both tracked year-over-year declines in PC shipments for the first quarter, with Gartner reporting a 4.6% contraction and IDC saying shipments fell 3%. Both reports also agreed that sales were affected by CPU shortages from Intel that pushed PC manufacturers toward AMD, but Gartner noted that the pain was mostly felt by smaller PC vendors. "The supply constraints affected the vendor competitive landscape as leading vendors had better allocation of chips and also began sourcing alternative CPUs from AMD," Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst at Gartner, said in a statement. "The top three vendors worldwide were still able to increase shipments despite the supply constraint by focusing on their high-end products and taking share from small vendors that struggled to secure CPUs." The two firms differ in what they track, with the biggest difference focusing on Chromebooks, lightweight notebook computers that use Alphabet Inc.'s Chrome operating system.
